Traditional Kitchens - The Centerpiece Of Any Home

By Matthew Kerridge

Kitchens are typically the center of any home. This is where families come together to eat meals, kids use the table to do homework and art projects and where you sit down with friends for a hot cup of coffee.

With so much time being spent in this one room, it is very important that the you place careful consideration in to the furniture and appliance that will be used in the room. Things like wooden cabinets and chairs, rather than plastic versions, are the perfect choices for a traditional kitchen.

Lightening is also important in the kitchen. Typically, in traditional kitchens, lights are usually found above the sink and other work areas. The addition of lights on the under side of the cabinets is also a good idea so that shadows are reduced. If you read recipes frequently, a reading lamp might also be a good idea. In smaller kitchens, natural light goes a long way to make the area look more spacious as well.

A pantry is also another essential additional for any traditional kitchen. You should always store non perishable food items at room temperature and places like cabinets and closets are perfect for this. It also makes it easier to find items when you need them. A good working crisper drawer in the fridge and a freezer are also great extensions from the traditional pantry.

Keeping your kitchen running smoothly requires not only the right utensils but also that they are placed in the proper places. In a traditional kitchen, a knife block works great and is much safer than storing knives in a drawer. Pots and pans need to be kept in cabinets with good air circulation. This is so they don't get covered in dust, but they don't begin to rust either. Utensils can be stored in containers on the counter top or hung from hooks.

The maintenance of all kitchen work surfaces is vital in any type of kitchen. Without certain precautions your whole kitchen can quickly become a health hazard. Sinks should be deep enough and have enough water pressure for cleaning any sized dishes. Take care to never chop veggies and meats in the same area and always use a cutting board that has been properly sanitized each use. If your family composts, keep those scraps away from all other food sources to prevent contamination.

Your counter tops will probably be the very first thing that people notice about your kitchen so you need to keep them clean. Counters should be durable and easy to clean and preferable made from a nonporous surface like tile, concrete, stone, laminate or resin.

After all, like we stated before, your kitchen is the centerpiece of your home. You can use gas or electric stoves, a single unit or a counter installed one. Either way, you will have what you need to keep your kitchen running efficiently. - 30289
